Four Types of Legal Outsourcing Companies
Enterprise managed services
Large teams handling recurring work under a contract: discovery, contract portfolios, compliance. Most of the providers above sell this, usually through a scoped proposal.
Flexible legal talent
Lawyers placed with you for a period or project. You supervise the work, as with Axiom or LawFlex.
Offshore support and virtual assistants
Lower hourly rates for defined tasks. Several published "top LPO" lists are written by virtual assistant agencies and rank themselves first. An assistant who helps with legal admin is not the same as a legal services provider, so ask who reviews the work.
Per-document drafting
No contract and no monthly commitment. You send one matter and pay a flat quote for one document. This suits small firms with uneven overflow, and it is what Legal Tank does.
How to Choose an LPO Provider
- Scope
- Name the work and its volume. Ask for a sample deliverable or a paid pilot on a closed matter before committing.
- Supervision
- Ask who reviews the work, what their qualifications are, and what your lawyer must still check. The filing lawyer stays responsible for it.
- Confidentiality
- Ask where data is stored, who can access it, and whether it trains any AI tool. Get security certificates rather than relying on a website badge.
- Location
- Confirm where the people doing the work sit. This affects client disclosure, data rules and turnaround.
- Pricing
- Ask for the unit (hour, document, page, month), any minimum, and what triggers an overage. Most enterprise providers publish none of this.
- Ownership
- This market is consolidating. Ask whether your contract and team survive a sale.
LPO Questions
What is a legal process outsourcing company?
It is a business that takes on legal support work for law firms and legal departments, such as document review, contract management, discovery and research. Many now call themselves alternative legal service providers. They are generally not law firms and do not represent clients.
How much does legal process outsourcing cost?
Most enterprise providers do not publish prices and quote after scoping the work. Of the ten companies here, Flatworld Solutions was the only one with a stated starting rate, at $10 per hour. The real cost depends on the unit of billing, the review needed, and any minimum.
What legal work can be outsourced?
Common examples are document review, eDiscovery, contract drafting and review, legal research, due diligence, compliance work, and drafting of briefs and motions for attorney review. Legal advice to clients and signing court filings stay with the responsible lawyer.
Is outsourcing legal work ethical?
It can be, if the lawyer supervises it. ABA Model Rule 5.3 covers responsibility for nonlawyer assistance, and Rule 1.6 covers confidentiality. Rule 5.5 bars assisting in the unauthorized practice of law. State bars add their own guidance, so check yours, including any duty to tell the client.
What is the difference between an LPO and a virtual paralegal?
An LPO delivers a legal work product or manages a process, often with its own review layer. A virtual paralegal or assistant usually works as an extra team member under your direction, so the supervision falls on you.
Can a small law firm use an LPO?
Yes, but the large providers mainly sell to big firms and corporations. Small firms usually do better with per-project lawyers, a virtual paralegal, or per-document drafting, none of which needs a recurring contract.
Need One Document, Not an Outsourcing Contract?
Legal Tank drafts briefs, motions and contracts one at a time for law firms and individuals, with a flat quote first and no recurring commitment. See how our legal process outsourcing service works.
